It's almost been a year of Ed Miliband, his appointment to the Labour leadership on the 25th September 2010, where his only sound bite was how he was 'Determined to repay the trust' invested in him by just over 1% of the party leadership election. Has it been a convincing year? For me, it has been far from it.
When the economy, the relentless talk of the deficit are all that dominate the headlines and the minds of the land, the Labour party and in particular, Ed Miliband, have failed to extend their own deficit reduction plans from criticisms of how the current administration are tackling the crisis or the occasional and somewhat welcome apology from Mr.Balls on how he's 'Deeply sorry' for the last government's economic legacy. When people are looking for an alternative to the government's aggressive cuts and relentless strategy, people find themselves investing their support in the Labour Party but not, crucially, in Ed Miliband.
This is all very well until 2015. Although we don't elect a president, we might as well, the last election proved more than any other, fuelled largely by the leader debates, that it is not just policy which sells a government, it's the other p, personality sells a government. Clegg inspired, Cameron looked resilient, Brown looked tired...The positive adjectives reined above the negative and we saw Brown ousted and Cameron in power. What do people see in Miliband? Inexperience, naivety and something of an uninspiring lisp. In truth, politics shouldn't be about personality, but we're human and thus judge humans - espeically when they're potentially leading our country.
Ed Miliband? I'd prefer David.
